No kidding....really???

I've always known Nebraska was littered with fault lines....but hearing of an earthquake, happening less than an hour from where we live, is kinda....well....cool (for lack of a better word).

3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Nebraska

The Nemaha County Sheriff's Department said the quake was felt all over the county.  KETV Twitter followers also reported feeling the quake. "It was a strange sensation," said Suzanne Whisler of Auburn. Mot, I told you WoW was dangerous!!!

A Massachusetts man who police say drove to Madison last week looking for a 17-year-old boy he met in an online game had an arsenal of weapons, restraints and rubber gloves in his vehicle when he was arrested Friday, Massachusetts State Police said.

"We feel extremely lucky that we've avoided a homicide," Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Wednesday.

Police also are crediting the boy's mother, whom DeSpain said "played a significant role in preventing her son from being victimized, injured or killed."

The son was 16 when he met Trevor L. Lucas, 21, of Gloucester playing the popular online role-playing game World of Warcraft, DeSpain said.

According to a criminal complaint, about a year ago, Lucas asked the son for nude photos of himself. The son notified Madison police and put Lucas on an "ignore list" for the game. The complaint said Lucas then sent the son messages threatening to hurt him if he didn't pay back money Lucas claimed to have spent on him in the game.

When Lucas came to her Madison home Aug. 26, according to the complaint, Lucas told the mother he was with the National Security Recruiting Department and needed to speak with her son. She then asked for identification, and called police while Lucas went to his vehicle.

While police were en route, DeSpain said, Lucas returned to the house and pulled a gun on the woman, then fled when she pushed the door closed and screamed.

On Friday, Lucas was charged in Dane County Circuit Court with second-degree recklessly endangering safety and impersonating a peace officer to aid in the commission of a crime, both felonies.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Michael Popovics said Lucas had four semi-automatic hand guns - two of which were loaded - along with four loaded, large-capacity magazines, two stun guns, three pepper spray containers, two assault knives, two expandable police batons and seven sets of handcuffs when he was arrested on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Weston, about 10 minutes outside of Boston, Friday afternoon.

Lucas also had two rolls of duct tape, a large number of plastic tie wraps that could be used as restraints, a set of professional lock-picking tools, a compass and two flashlights, along with rubber gloves and a large number of plastic bags, Popovics said.

Lucas was out on bail for several felony firearms and ammunition violations in Massachusetts, where this week he was charged with additional weapons violations.

Madison police will be meeting with federal authorities to determine if federal charges will be filed, DeSpain said.

You can't make me!!!

Happy Friday Folks!!!! I've taken the day off to drive to Des Moines to see my buddies Mel and Sheila. Mel and I are on the kayak safety team for the HyVee Triathlon next weekend...and wanted to get out in our boats one more time before the big day.

Anyhoo...I'll be back around on Monday. Until then, I leave you with this little news story gem I found yesterday....

When a son, angry that his father had ordered him to clean up his room, screamed at Dad and threw a plate of food across the dinner table, Dad called 911. The son is 28-year-old Andrew Mizsak, who lives rent-free with his parents in the Cleveland suburb of Bedford, Ohio, and is a member of the Bedford School Board (and whose mom is a city councilwoman). After police arrived, the habitually untidy son apologized and, according to their report, "was sent to his room to clean it. He was crying uncontrollably." Subsequently, the school board punished Andrew by removing two of his duties. [Plain Dealer (Cleveland), 5-17-09]

It's the POO!

A phone conversation earlier this week.

Nej "Hey babe, what do you fireman call the place where a fire starts?"

Mot "The point of origin?"

Nej "Yeah, that's it."

Nej (sigh) "Hmmm...."

Mot "What?"

Nej "Well, that's not very distinguished. It's the P.O.O.....the poo. I was hoping for something much cooler sounding. More CSI, less first grade."

Mot "Well, you could call it the Point of Ignition, but that wouldn't be correct."

Nej "Hmmm...the POI....the poi....nah, that won't work either. Poi sounds disgusting, besides, it's already been taken by skydivers and the military. It might get confused with the point of impact. Poo it is. OK thanks babe, talk to you later!"

Mot "Uh....OK."

Poor guy doesn't know what to think of me sometimes. I can see him standing in the kitchen, staring at the phone. Wondering why he married me, and if he should be worried about my mental health.

BELLEVUE, Washington - Fire officials in the Seattle suburbs say a sunny day and a dog's glass water bowl combined to cause a blaze that charred the back of a home.

Bellevue Fire Department Lt. Eric Keenan says investigators determined the glass bowl of water focused sunlight enough to act like a magnifying glass and start the fire on the home's wood deck Sunday.

Investigators said there was no electrical wiring or other possible cause.

The homeowners were away, but neighbors noticed the smoke and flames. The family dog was rescued. Damage is estimated at $215,000.

Big Brother is watching you!

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Two seasonal Yellowstone National Park concession workers have been fired after a live webcam caught them urinating into the Old Faithful geyser.

Park spokesman Al Nash said a 23-year-old man on Tuesday was fined $750 and placed on three years of unsupervised probation for urinating, being off trail in a restricted area and taking items from the area. The man also was banned from Yellowstone for two years.

The second employee's case is pending.

The park's dispatch center was called after someone watching a webcam on the geyser saw six employees leaving the trail and walking on Old Faithful on May 4.

The geyser was not erupting at the time.

So Bill...what do you want to do over our lunch break today?

Well Bob, we could go pee into Old Faithful. How fun would that be??? The chicks will totally dig it.

But Bob, isn't there a webcam somewhere? What if someone sees us? And another thing...isn't this basically a volcano....won't it be really hot??

Bill, no one watches that thing. Ya' loser! And we'll make sure we go when "the Faith" isn't doing it's thing.

Genius!

What's that smell??

SAN JOSE, Calif. - An office worker cleaning a fridge full of rotten food created a smell so noxious that it sent seven co-workers to the hospital and made many others ill.

Firefighters had to evacuate the AT&T building in downtown San Jose on Tuesday after the fumes led someone to call 911. A hazmat team was called in.

What crews found was an unplugged refrigerator crammed with moldy food.

Authorities say an enterprising office worker had decided to clean it out, placing the food in a conference room while using two cleaning chemicals to scrub down the mess.

The mixture of old lunches and disinfectant caused 28 people to need treatment for vomiting and nausea.

Authorities say the worker who cleaned the fridge didn't need treatment — she can't smell because of allergies.

I'm a big allergy sufferer....have been for quite some time. In fact, I once had a sinus infection for 6 years straight. For real. They'd give me drugs....I'd take them all. Things would seem good, and then a week or two later, BAM, another sinus infection.

I finally broke down and went to an allergist a number of years ago, and he said I most likely never got rid of it.

During those 6 years, my sense of smell was next to nothing. After the allergy shots my allergist put me on started working, and my sense of smell came back....I arrived at one conclusion.

I didn't miss it. Not one bit. Really....take it away again please.

There are some things I would love to smell forever....my hubby wearing Obsession, baking bread, and black permanent markers. But, for the most part, the world stinks.......er, smells. :-)

But, even having said all that, a smell that puts 7 people in the hospital, and has 28 treated for vomiting and nausea?? And she can't smell it because of allergies??

Whew doggie...them are some allergies. (hehe)

Jail Birds?

LOS ANGELES - A man was charged Tuesday with smuggling songbirds into the United States by hiding more than a dozen of them in an elaborate, custom-tailored pair of leggings during a flight from Vietnam to Los Angeles.

Sony Dong, 46, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport in March after an inspector spotted bird feathers and droppings on his socks and tail feathers peeking out from under his pants, prosecutors said.

"He had fashioned these special cloth devices to hold the birds," said U.S. attorney spokesman Thom Mrozek. "They were secured by cloth wrappings and attached to his calves with buttons."

And he'd have gotten away with it, had it not been for those...........tail feathers and bird droppings? Ugh!!!!

Ummmm....owwww!!!

In January 2008, London's The Sun found a practitioner of a new art form in which a design is inked, with a tattoo needle, into the sclera, which is the white part of the eyeball. That volunteer (from Canada) may well be the only daredevil, or one of a tiny number, but Oklahoma state senators were alarmed enough that they passed legislation out of committee in February to ban the practice in their state. "If we can stop ... one person from doing it, we've been successful," said Sen. Cliff Branan. An Oklahoma City tattoo artist told KSBI-TV that the law is useless, in that "common sense" will prevent the problem. (So far, only the senators from Oklahoma seem to believe they have constituents who might actually ask for ink to be inserted into their eyeballs.)
